Why Vote For Me?

To the Editor:

I was speaking with voters last week and one asked me, “Why should I vote for you?” It seemed like a legitimate question.

When I ran for police commissioner four years ago I campaigned that the Police Commission needed to be energized, needed goals and objectives, and needed to focus more heavily on managing our traffic. I accomplished that working with the other members of the commission. We set yearly goals, created new evaluation models, implemented traffic calming procedures, created a traffic unit, and opened up communications with the union. We hired some great new officers and even cut the head count of the police department. We changed the way we dealt with the public, encouraging and listening to public participation. We helped solve problems for our residents.

I believe in constantly improving. You don’t enter a foot race saying you want to run about as fast as you did last time. Your goal has to be to do better. I am a goal setter and believe that change can and should be a good thing. I don’t just go with the flow, I question why we are doing something and is there a better way to get the job done.

I believe the same thing can be accomplished on the Legislative Council. Less politics and more work. Let me say that again, less partisan politics and more good work. Setting goals as to what the council will accomplish each year is critical. Reporting to the public our accomplishments is an obligation. Working with other elected and appointed boards is required. Treating each member of the council evenly and with respect is an obligation. Making decisions after listening to all discussions and hearing the voters, not before in the traditional smoke filled room, is my pledge. Serving the voters of Newtown is an honor.

In the end the Legislative Council has to represent the residents of Newtown, not just their own political party. As a candidate for the IPN, which consists of Republicans, Democrats, Independents and unaffiliated voters, I believe I am in an ideal position to listen to and represent the residents of Newtown. I hope you will consider once again voting for me to represent you, this time on the Legislative Council.
