Nutmeg Celiac Support Group

DANBURY — The annual fall meeting of the area Celiac-Sprue Support Group will be held on Friday, November 9, at the Community Center for Behavioral Health at 7:30 pm.

A double program is planned with guest speaker, Nancy Sherr, co-owner of Chamomille Natural Foods, discussing diets and products for people who cannot eat any foods that contain wheat, oats, barley or rye or have wheat allergies, and Sterk’s Bakery, a Canadian company that specializes in gluten-free products.

Ms Sherr has been in the food business with her husband for 25 years, including having had a professional food service experience, run a deli, taught cooking classes on natural foods and allergy baking, and counseled many people who have special diets and multiple food allergies. She will focus her talk on the diet for life that people with celiac disease must follow.

Avoiding all ingredients that contain gluten makes reading product labels essential and food preparation a challenge.

By popular demand, breads, muffins, cookies and cakes from Sterk’s Bakery will be available for the on November 9. The company was unable to cross the border for the last scheduled meeting of the group. Purchase at the meeting saves shipping and handling from the company catalog as their products are unavailable locally.
