Raising Funds For The Vietnam Children’s Center

Helping Hands Vietnam, a service club at Newtown High School, held a fundraiser on Sunday, October 28, to raise money for the Binh Duong Children’s Center in Binh Duong, Vietnam.

A buffet luncheon was provided by Thang Long Vietnamese Cuisine Restaurant at 56 Padanaram Road in Danbury. Twenty-five friends and relatives of the club members feasted on curried coconut chicken, tofu soup, and fried wontons, among other traditional Vietnamese foods.

Hien Flores, the owner, spoke to the group about his experiences coming to America after fleeing South Vietnam at the end Vietnamese War. Natalie Monks, who came from Vietnam two years ago at the age of four months, entertained the guests with a rendition of the alphabet song, sung into the restaurant’s karaoke microphone.

This is the third fundraiser the club has held since its inception last year. So far the club has been able to raise enough money to help finish the construction of the center and to buy toys and equipment for the 20 children who are staying there.
