Bees Edge Hawks In Softball Action

The Newtown Killer Bees nipped the Newtown Bubble Hawks in U12 softball action this past week.

Emily Bell pitched for the Bees, striking out four batters in the first two innings and making a critical out at the plate with catcher Skylar Kneski. Additionally, great defense was provided by Tegan Doherty at short and Sammie Strocchia at first. Both fielders made several outstanding plays to keep the Bubble Hawks at bay.

Offensively, the Killer Bees struggled in the first two innings, but came alive in the third with a two-out rally that began with Alexa Horkachuck’s keen eye yielding her a walk. Singles from Strocchia, Doherty, and Bell followed and all runners scored with help from Gillian Ostrofsky and Allison Silkowski.

The Bees continued the rally in the fourth inning, scoring five additional runs aided by Kneski’s single, Isabella Luciano’s double, and Sarah Mawdsley’s aggressive base running.

The last at bat for the Bees began with a tie score of 11-11. Claire Hull and Ostrofsky singled, but felt the pressure when the Bubble Hawks fought back with a double play. Hull was on base in scoring position when Natalie Shaker ended the game with a triple.

For the Bubble Hawks, Samantha Cody led off in the batting lineup, going 4-for 4-with three singles, a triple, 2 RBIs and three runs scored.

Sarah Spillane struck out two in the first and Sydney Flint struck out the side in the second to keep the game tied at one apiece going into the third inning.  In the fourth, Joanna Vodola and Robin Rockwell each drew a walk, Cody hit a single driving in a run, and Allison Morrill hit a line drive down the first base line resulting in a home run, driving in three more runs. Jenna Carvalho, Tina DeMaio and Sarah Cizmazia also drew walks and the Bubble Hawks scored 5 runs.

In the bottom of the fourth, Sophie Ackert made a great catch in the outfield but the Killer Bees were able to come up with five more runs of their own and lead by one run going into the fifth and final inning. Joanna Vodola scored on a single by Cody to tie the game.
