Children’s Programs

*Science Fun: Educator Bonnie Shugrue will conduct an “Icky Science” workshop on Thursday, October 21, at 4 pm. Ages 7-10 will have the opportunity to make and play with gooey mixtures and solutions.

A $3 material fee is due the day of the program; online registration is requested. 

*Magic School Bus illustrator Bruce Degen: Mark your calendars!

On Saturday, November 6, at 2 pm, world renowned author illustrator Bruce Degen will be at the library to talk about his latest Magic School Bus offering on global warming, The Magic School Bus and The Climate Challenge.

We are very fortunate to have such an esteemed talent living in our community. Mr Degen will talk about the creative process and the research he did for the book. Copies of Climate Challenge will be available for purchase following the presentation, which is recommended for ages 7 to adult. 

*George Seurat and Pointillism: Artist and educator Randi Rote will explain Pointillism and the works of artist George Seurat on Wednesday, November 10, at 4:15 pm, for ages 5-9.

Participants will create their own masterpieces in the artist’s signature style. Online registration is requested, and a $3 material fee is due on the day of the program.

Young Adult Programs

*Book Launch: On Saturday, November 13, from 1 to 2:30, meet author Kathleen Kudlinski at her book launch party for her spectacular new book about wildlife and Native Americans, Horse Indian Wolf.

This family program for kids age 7 and up features a slide show, Native American craft, snacks, and face painting, and includes a book signing, with copies of the book available to purchase for $17. All proceeds benefit the library.

*Young Writers Salon’ will return on Sunday, November 14, at 3 pm.

Writers in grades 6-10 will read their original poems and short stories to an admiring audience in our coffeehouse setting.

*Tellabration 2010: On Friday, November 19, at 7:30 pm, Tellabration! returns.

This international storytelling festival for adults and young adults age 10 and up will feature professional tellers Marcia Hupp and Gwendolyn Quezaire-Presutti, as well as student tellers again this year.  Join us for a night of fascinating tales and entertainment. Sign up online.

Programs For Adults

*“Mark Twain, A Book Discussion Series” with Julie Stern: In this year that will see the publication of Twain’s autobiography, so scandalous that it was kept under wraps for 100 years after his death, we have been reading and discussing classic works by Mark Twain to rediscover why he may well be the greatest American novelist.

Join us for the series finale on Wednesday, November 10, at 7:30, for a program about A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.

*Celebrating Chocolate: On Wednesday, November 3, at 7 pm, we will celebrate the wonderful world of chocolate with baker Maria Poirier Brandriff. Online registration is requested for this free event, in which we will make and eat some truffles.

*Book Groups: The Nonfiction Book Group will meet to discuss Lost City of Z on Tuesday, November 2, at 1 pm; The Daytime Book Group will talk about How To Be Good by Nick Hornby on Tuesday, November 9, at 1; and The Evening Book Discussion Group will meet Thursday, November 18, at 7:30, to discuss John Irving’s Last Night at Twisted River.

Newcomers are always welcome at any of the library’s book discussion groups.

*Beading Class: Local artist Pat Martin will return for a second class on the art of beading. Use beautiful seed beads, lovely crystals, foiled accent beads, and one of a kind blown beads to make a pair of earrings.

Class is limited to 12 students, and registration is necessary. Beading II: Earrings will be offered Thursday, November 4, at 7 pm, and there is $12 supply fee, due at registration.
