Dental Associates Local Candy Buyback Is November 2

The Newtown office of Dental Associates of Connecticut is planning its Halloween Candy Buyback Program for the eighth straight year on Tuesday, November 2.

Most parents do not realize that tooth decay is the most common disease found in children, and also the most preventable. Teeth are more vulnerable to decay during the first few years after they come in and since children are getting teeth until age 13, they have a higher risk of decay until about age 15.

When parents brings their children to the Newtown Dental Associates’ office at 11 Church Hill Road between 8 and 10 am that day, the Tooth Fairy and Dr Smile E. Fox will weigh each child’s unopened, excess Halloween candy and buy it from the child for $2 per pound, up to a maximum of 10 pounds.

To date, the organization has bought back almost three tons of candy valued at more than $12,000, according to a release from the practice.

“This event gets larger every year” said pediatric dentist Dr John Iwasaki. “The Candy Buyback program is important to us because we feel we have a responsibility to our patients and communities to promote good dental health practices. By continually having this event, it shows we are committed to this goal.”

Last year, 1,447 pounds of candy was collected and Dental Associates of Connecticut anticipates surpassing that amount this year. The candy, along with toothbrushes, will be donated to various local service agencies in the towns where Dental Associates has offices (Danbury, New Milford, Newtown, and Trumbull) and to Operation Gratitude, an organization that sends care packages to military personnel overseas.

For more information, contact the Newtown office at 203-270-4586.
