Newtown Squirts Win NESC Haunted Shootout Hockey Tournament
The Western Connecticut Youth Hockey Associationâs Squirt B Team, with four Newtown players, took the championship trophy home by winning all five games in their division at the New England Sports Center Haunted Shootout Tournament in Marlborough, Mass during the weekend of October 22-24.
The Squirts started the tournament with a strong win over the Yale Bulldogs. Justin Moore had two goals and one assist.
The second game verses the New York State Clarkstown Capitals resulted in two goals each by Adam Gay and Justin Moore with Moore and Nathan Torre-Tasso assisting.
In the third game of the tourney, against the Massachusetts Baystate Griffin Sharkâs team, Torre-Tasso had an assist and Gay scored a goal. In the semifinal round verses the Hamden Dragons, Gay had two goals and one assist, and Torre-Tasso scored a goal and added an assist.
In the October 24 championship game verses the New York Bedford Bears, the Western Squirts battled hard and secured the championship when Adam Gay scored with less than two minutes to go. Thomas Phaneuf and Nathan Torre-Tasso played strong defense throughout the tournament and held the opposition to just three goals in five games.
