Newtownâs Forest Habitats And Their Inhabitants
The Town of Newtownâs Conservation and Inland Wetlands Commissions will present a seminar titled âFostering Young Forests and Wildlifeâ on Saturday, November 6, from 2 to 3:30 pm, in the Council Chambers at Newtown Municipal Center. The workshop is free and open to all ages.
Seminar topics will cover identification and management of young forests and wildlife, such as ruffed grouse, songbirds, and Northeast cottontail. The seminar will also detail the efforts of Newtownâs Conservation Commission to encourage owl habitat.
âConnecticut forests provide habitat for different types of species depending on the age of the forest,â said Ann Astarita, an official with Newtown Conservation Commission. âThis seminar focuses on young or early successional, forest habitats.â
Guest speakers, who will discuss the types of birds and animals that need such areas to survive, will be Andrew Weik, a regional biologist and members of Ruffed Grouse Society, and Adria Henderson, Newtown Conservation Commissioner.
Presentations will run approximately 20â30 minutes each and will allow time for a question and answer period.
Registration is requested and can be done by calling 203-270-4352 or sending an e-mail to ann.astarita@newtown-ct.gov.
