Michael J. Zilinek of Newtown passed away peacefully on October 16, 2025, at home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on January 27, 1940, in Danbury, Mike was the only child of Nicholas and Janet Zilinek. He is survived by his beloved wife, Frauke; his three sons, Michael, Erik, and Christopher, and their spouses; and seven adoring grandchildren, all of whom carry forward their Opa’s warmth, strength, and quiet humor.

True to his humble nature, Mike requested no honors or services. He wished for no fanfare, no calling hours, and no burial, preferring to be cremated in simplicity and peace. Those who knew him understand this perfectly — Mike never sought recognition, only purpose.

After serving his country in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1965, Mike found his life’s calling in service to his community. He joined Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Department in 1973, where his commitment spanned more than five decades. During that time, he served in numerous roles — including chief engineer and, most recently, secretary. He also worked at Edmond Town Hall as a maintenance man and later served the Town of Newtown as Deputy Fire Marshal.

Mike’s dedication to the fire service was not about titles or accolades; it was about people. His steady presence, willingness to help, and genuine kindness defined his every role. He was the kind of person who showed up quietly, worked hard, and made everyone around him better.

Those who had the privilege of knowing Mike — both in the Hawleyville Fire family and beyond — saw in him a rare humility and unwavering sense of duty. His final wishes reflected exactly who he was: a man who gave without asking, who served without seeking praise, and who lived with integrity every single day.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company, in honor of a man who dedicated his life to helping others.

Michael J. Zilinek of Newtown passed away peacefully on October 16, 2025, at home, surrounded by his loving family.
