‘Yes’ Times Five!

To the Editor:

Charter revision is a good thing! Yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes: Five lever pulls on yes for the referendum. You will be voting what’s best for Newtown’s future.

Instituting the revision may be ahead of the anticipated time frame, but if a fast, up-and-running start is required by state statute, then let’s do it. The sooner the better for all of us, for Newtown.

The revision has been very well done. For almost a year, 12 very talented, dedicated fair-minded neighbors researched, interviewed, and deliberated their way to a final version: that is more responsive and responsible to the voters; that provides more accountability for decisions and dollars; that sets up year-round financial planning, with ongoing attention to detail with a long-range perspective; that provides for checks and balances equally to preclude stonewalling the process at hand; that allows all employees equal access to dismissal redress. Most important, major expenditures will require a referendum insuring each voter a full, fair, and clear voice in the budget process and ultimately our taxation. That is equal representation of the most significant kind!

The work has been done well. The revision is excellent and straight forward. A new charter now will guarantee that the changes will be made. Newtown’s government will be better equipped to take on the development of Fairfield Hills and the healthy, productive growth we’re all committed to. Please vote yes on all five charter questions. Whatever your choices, please be sure to vote.
