Panel To Study Tax Breaks
Panel To Study Tax Breaks
The Board of Selectmen officially created the Emergency Volunteer Tax Incentive Committee Monday night by appointing six members.
The committeeâs charge will be straight forward, according to First Selectman Herb Rosenthal, since a newly-passed state statute already states that towns can now grant fire and EMS volunteers up to $1,000 a year off their property taxes. The committee will establish the number of volunteers who would be eligible for tax savings, and how much it will cost the town in lost revenue.
Appointed to the committee were John Basso, Chris Petersen and Liz Caine of the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and Kevin Cragin, Cliff Richardson and Bill OâKeefe of the Fire Commission.
The selectmen will also add one or two representatives from the Legislative Council.
There are currently 51 members of the ambulance corps and more than 200 in the five volunteer fire companies.
