Football Team Blows Out Weston, Gets Ready To Host Bethel
Newtown High School's football team defeated host Weston 56-7 on Halloween, improving to 5-2 this season. Seven Nighthawks found the end zone on eight touchdowns. Weston fell to 3-4 overall.
This was Newtown's third blowout in which the team has scored more than 50 points as the Hawks improved to 5-0 in South-West Conference play.
The Nighthawks scored 22 points in the opening quarter and put the game well out of reach building a commanding 43-0 halftime lead.
Quarterback Marcus Gerace started the scoring with a one-yard TD run; Nick Pavia's two-point conversion run treated the Hawks to an early 8-0 lead. Cole Stockwell's 20-yard rush into the end zone and point after kick by Jake Roszman made it 15-0. Gerace connected with Emmet Regan on a five-yard scoring play and Spencer Maddox tacked on the point after.
In the second quarter the Hawks continued to pour it on. Gerace hooked up with Luke Stewart on a 16-yard TD pass. Cam Kullgren's 12-yard score when he scooped the ball following Caden Cuomo's blocked punt extended the lead. Gerace hit Grady Marks on a 12-yard pass play for the final score of the opening half.
Luke Gagnon rushed for a pair of second-half TDs, one from four yards out and the other a 61-yarder. Roszman and Maddox split kicking duties throughout the night.
Gerace completed 11 of 14 pass attempts for 126 yards. Gagnon rushed nine times for 132, Stockwell seven times for 90, Jack Colonel three times for 42 yards, Gerace three times for 38, and Jackson Powers had a trio of rushes for 25.
There was no tricking Newtown's defense which forced four turnovers. Graham Spencer and Cuomo both had interceptions and Henri Quirk had a fumble recovery.
The Hawks compiled 37 tackles with Aaron Calle registering six, Andrew Moran four, and Miles Commodore, Quirk, Kullgren, Nick Stockwell, and Nick Pavia each with three. Kullgren, Liam McGovern, and Kieran Garrity each had a quarterback sack and Pavia and Calle combined for a QB sack.
NHS will host Bethel Friday, November 7 at 6:30 pm. Bethel has a record of 2-5. Newtwon is ranked third in Class L and vying for a first-round state playoff home game. The Hawks still have games at Notre Dame Prep of Fairfield (Friday, November 14 at 6:30) and home to Masuk of Monroe Wednesday, November 26 at 6 pm. Then it is on to the playoffs.
