NATIVE AMERICAN ROOKWOOD PORTRAITS ARE ON OFFER AT TREADWAY GALLERY w/1 cut
avv/gs set 11/7 #718759
OâBRYONVILLE, OHIO â Treadway Gallery will offer a variety of Native American inspired Rookwood, November 16âDecember 31. The gallery has a selection of Rookwood pottery similar to the vessels shown at the Cincinnati Art Museumâs âVanishing Frontiersâ exhibition.
âVanishing Frontier: Rookwood, Farny and the American Indianâ explores depictions of Native Americans created by Rookwood artists and painter Henry Farny. These works illustrate the feeling of sentiment and loss held by many turn-of-the-century Americans as the Native American way of life was coming to an end. These Cincinnati artists strove to capture a disappearing culture in their dramatic portraits and majestic landscapes.
The museum exhibition includes more than 50 ceramic plaques, mugs and vases from the James J. Gardner Collection of Rookwood. A serious collector of Rookwood pottery for many years, Gardnerâs collection of Native American portraits reflect a sense melancholy along with the familiar idealized stereotype of the Plains Indians.
The collection at Treadway Gallery includes mugs, vases and covered vessels, each depicting a detailed portrait and exemplifying the standard for which Rookwood Pottery is prized. Highlights include: A tapered jug, âFire Lighteningâ executed by Sallie Toohey in 1897 that shows the face of a young American Indian male and a handled mug with the profile of Sioux man, âLone Elk Sioux,â painted by Adeliza D. Sehon in 1900.
