George Donald Tibbitts
Dearly Missed By Those Who Loved Him
George Donald Tibbitts, loving husband of Esther (French) Tibbitts of Newtown, died October 31, at Danbury Hospital Hospice. He was born in New Britain on May 29, 1923, and grew up in Bristol.
In addition to his wife, his three children; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law; and several nieces and nephews survive him. He will be dearly missed by all.
Mr Tibbitts attended Texas A&M before being called to serve in World War II. He served bravely as a first lieutenant in the US Army Corp of Engineers, where his experiences transformed him into a man of great inner strength, courage, focus, quiet compassion, and an uncompromising determination to live a life built on his principals. After returning home to Bristol, he graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Engineering, married his sweetheart Esther, and started a family.
He worked for New Departure in Bristol and eventually moved to Sandusky, Ohio, Danbury, Bethel, and then Newtown, during which time he was manager of engineering for the Barden Corporation, until his retirement in 1985. He volunteered time to support and lead the Sea Scouts of Danbury.
He was a longtime resident of Newtown and was active in the Newtown Congregational Church, serving as a member of the building committee for the present sanctuary and as an active member of the Board of Trustees. Besides his family, his lifelong passions included walking, fishing, building and flying model airplanes, âhorse tradingâ cars, and later in life spending time at The Camp of the Woods at Lake George founded by his uncle George âPopâ Tibbitts.
He had valiantly fought dementia for the past few years and the family is eternally grateful for the support of many friends, doctors, and his caregivers, Linda and Dale, through this difficult time.           Â
A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, November 8, at 2 pm, at the Newtown Congregational Church. Interment with military honors will follow at Newtown Village Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Funeral arrangements are in care of the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd Street, New York City NY 10016; Alzheimer Foundation of America for Alzheimerâs Research, 322 Eighth Avenue, 7th Floor, New York City NY 10001; or the charity of oneâs choice.
