Let Us Pull Together
Let Us Pull Together
To the Editor:
Now that we can put the elections of 2008 behind us, it is appropriate to examine the power of hope compared to the desperation of fear. President-elect Barack Obama carried Connecticut, Chris Lyddy was sent to Hartford, and the people of Connecticut rejected by a wide margin Question #1 calling for a potentially divisive constitutional convention. In addition, Chris Murphy will be going back to Washington, D.C. Hope has trumped fear both nationally and locally. The past has been rejected, the future has been embraced and the state constitution has been reaffirmed. Racial barriers have been discarded; the vibrancy of new local representation has been supported, and consistent representation has been endorsed. We can turn the page nationally and locally by supporting our political leaders and our state constitution.Â
Let us now pull together as a nation, a state and a town to begin to heal any remaining divisions. Let us have the support of all Newtown leaders, including community organizers and the clergy, to curtail any divisions and encourage a reasoned approach to meeting the needs of a diverse electorate, and not only the wishes of those who agree with particular positions as matters of organization policy or religious convictions. Those of honor, patriotism, and faith can do no less.
Sincerely,
Richard English
