On November 1, Newtown Police Department held a “Gun Buyback” event at the police department headquarters, 191 South Main Street. Individuals were able to turn in firearms through an anonymous process and in exchange received gift cards. Forty free gun safes were also given away on a first come first served basis. Non-working guns, flare guns, and BB and pellet guns, as well as ghost guns, could be turned in but were not eligible for gift cards. Gift card values ranged from $200 for assault weapons to $25 for derringer style handguns. The event was sponsored by numerous organizations, including Newtown Police Department and Newtown Action Alliance Foundation.
