Clarification is needed concerning an October 28 article on Taunton Lake that stated “swimming is prohibited.” It is true that the Newtown Fish and Game Club does not allow its members to swim in the lake. This is because the club considers the lake to be a “very fragile” natural resource, and it maintains that swimming might compromise water quality. When Taunton Lake was Newtown’s only source of drinking water, the no-swimming rule was strictly enforced for all town residents. Since development of the Pootatuck aquifer by the United Water Company on South Main, Taunton Lake is now considered a back-up water source, and there is no official constraint against swimming for lakeside residents. Nevertheless, protection of water quality continues to be a priority.

Also, in last week’s edition of The Bee, the incorrect date was listed for The Friends of Music special program dedicated to the tercentennial. The program will be at The Meeting House on November 19.
