Newtown High School To Present ‘A Thurber Carnival’

The Newtown High School drama club will present A Thurber Carnival written in 1945 by American author and humorist James Thurber.

The production is a comedy, showcasing a variety of Thurber’s pieces, which contain short stories that beautifully portray Thurber’s vivid outlook on society, life, and human nature. Thurber’s brilliantly written stories, ranging from wildly different to utterly realistic, set the production apart from any other past high school fall productions.

Newtown senior Greg Gordon, the director of the comedic masterpiece, chose the show for a very specific reason.

“I chose A Thurber Carnival because it is very different from anything that Newtown High School has produced in the past,” he said. “The show is very diverse and is widely accessible to a large audience. I was fascinated with the many different stories told in the play that range from the most incredible, wild and hilarious situations to the most realistic, sincere and profound moments.”

Greg commented that the show is incredibly dynamic because of its actors. He said that at the beginning of the production the cast was faced with the challenge of telling a story onstage with a short time frame in which to prepare.

“All 13 members of the cast met the challenge with tremendous professionalism, maturity, and dedication to the show,” said the student director. “They have also been able to fuse together as one ensemble. Their chemistry and timing together is simply fabulous.”

The show is appropriate for all ages.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors. Performance dates and times for A Thurber Carnival are Thursday and Friday, November 17 and 18, at 8:30 pm, and Saturday, November 19, at 4:30 pm. For ticket information call 426-7983.
