Birds Of Chile And Christmas Count Plans
WOODBURY ââ On Thursday evening November 17, the Western CT Bird Club will feature a slide program titled âBirding The Ends Of The Earth: The Birds of Chileâ by John Longstreth, who is center director at Bent of the River Audubon Center in Southbury. The event begins with a social gathering at 6:30 and program at 7.
In January 2004 Mr Longstreth (along with Dr Noble Proctor, Vince and Carol Sideli, and Ed Hagen â all experienced birders) traveled throughout Chile, including Patagonia, to see and photograph birds. Mr Longstreth is an avid nature photographer, and he brought back more than 2,000 images. His program includes a selection of the best of these photographs.
Also discussed during the November meeting will be the upcoming December 17 Woodbury/Roxbury Christmas Bird Count. Throughout the United States during the month of December and early January, various bird clubs and Audubon societies will be conducting Christmas Bird Counts.
In the mid-1970s, the Western CT Bird Club was formed around the Christmas Bird Count, and this year on Saturday, December 17, club members along with other interested bird watchers will be counting birds in the towns of Bridgewater, Brookfield, New Milford, Newtown, Roxbury, Southbury, Washington, and Woodbury.
The public is invited to join club members by attending the November 17 meeting free of charge. The meeting will be held in the Fellowship Hall (side entrance) at the First Congregational Church of Woodbury at 214 Main Street South (Route 6). From Newtown, take Exit 15 off I-84 at Southbury and follow Route 6 into Woodbury. Just past the traffic light at the junction of Route 317, look for LaBonneâs Market on the left. Parking is available around the back and to the right.
The Western CT Bird Club is a nonprofit organization devoted to promoting the pleasure of bird watching. The club meets the third Thursday of the month from September to April (except December). In May, there is a club picnic and in June, the club participates in a June Bird Count. For more information contact club president Larry Fischer at 203-426-3901, or club treasurer Anne Kehmna at 860-354-8417.
Bent of the River is a National Audubon Society sanctuary open to the public for hiking and bird watching from dawn to dusk, seven days a week. It is located on East Flat Hill Road, off Route 172 in Southbury.
