Cancer Incidence, Mortality Databases Now Online

HARTFORD — The Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) has announced an online database on cancer incidence and mortality rates for Connecticut and each of the eight counties in the state.

The “Cancer Incidence and Mortality in Connecticut” resource produces tables with cancer rates for each of the state’s counties, and county maps colored according to the range of cancer rates for each type of cancer.

The website allows users to obtain maps and tables of data on cancer incidence and mortality rates. Years of diagnosis or death can be selected (1973 through 2005), along with a specific cancer “site” (type of cancer), a specific county or counties, and race/ethnicity.

There are also links to other important websites, including the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program (seer.cancer.gov), which was established in 1973 and is useful for understanding the database. The NCI is an authoritative source of information on cancer incidence and survival in the United States.

The Connecticut Tumor Registry (CTR), a part of the Connecticut Department of Public Health, has been responsible for collecting data on reportable tumors diagnosed in all Connecticut residents since its establishment in 1941. CTR’s database contains statistical information on cancers diagnosed since 1935, making it the oldest cancer registry in the country.

Most of the CTR’s information is collected from hospitals and pathology laboratories in Connecticut, which are required by state regulation to report all reportable tumors to the CTR.

The CTR has agreement with certain other states to receive information on Connecticut residents who are diagnosed or treated in those states.

To access the “Cancer Incidence and Mortality in Connecticut” database or to learn more about CTR, the visit the DPH website at www.ct.gov/dph and click either “Programs and Services” or “Statistics and Research” and then “Cancer” for the tumor registry link, or call 860-509-7163.
