In an article entitled “Fire Prevention Day Brought Firefighters To Hawley” in the October 31 edition of The Bee, volunteer firefighter Ray Corbo’s company affiliation was listed incorrectly. Mr Corbo is a member of Newtown Hook & Ladder Volunteer Fire Company.

Also, in the same story, students were told to cover their faces with their hands when performing “Stop Drop & Roll” in the event that their clothes catch on fire, not when they are trying to leave a burning building, as the article stated.

The smoke room was used to demonstrate how to crawl low in smoke when attempting to leave a burning building, and to make students comfortable with firefighters directing them through the smoke. The firefighters’ visit was in honor of Fire Prevention Week. Although it was stated at the school, chainsaws are not used by firefighters to open doors.

In the November 7 edition of The Bee, it was reported that Newtown Youth & Family Services would seek an increase in the agency’s 2009 budget proposal. The agency sought and received $214,000 in the 2007-2008 budget cycle, and received an increase in the 2008-2009 budget to $270,000. According to agency officials, NYFS will not be seeking an additional increase in its 2009-2010 budget proposal.
