Horse Guard Commemorates 200 Years With Bicentennial Book
The Second Company Governorâs Horse Guard (2GHG) has produced and published a book to commemorate 200 years of service to the Governor, the Connecticut Army National Guard and the State of Connecticut.
The 136-page book contains 150 photos and covers the history of the troop from 1808 to 2008, including the activation of the Unit during World Wars I and II. 2GHG was formed in 1808 in New Haven, and later moved to Ansonia and then to Bethany.
The quest for a permanent home finally brought 2GHG to Newtown in 1988. There is a section on the move and improvements made to the property and buildings at the Fairfield Hills Dairy Farm. Once the troop settled in, events such as the Annual Horse Show and the St. Jude Childrenâs Hospital fundraiser became possible.
The book ends with a section on the troop today: its organization, missions, recruit training, annual training, cavalry drill, the Open House, the Saddle Up for Life Therapeutic Riding program, and of course, the horses.
Books may be purchased from The Friends of 2GHG, Inc. Please contact Cheryl Peatfield at cpeat@sbcglobal.net for details.
For 200 years, 2GHG has been serving the citizenry of Connecticut and is one of the oldest Cavalry Units in continuous service in the United States. 2GHG Troopers participate in ceremonial events including parades, funeral honor squads, gubernatorial inaugurals, presidential inaugural parades and other events at the order of either the Governor or the Adjutant General.
Members are dedicated to preserving the history of the cavalry in the State of Connecticut.
