To the Editor:
For the last four years, I have had the pleasure of walking three miles a day in a beautiful setting at Fairfield Hills. From the bucolic meadow to the paths through the woods, it remains a place of calm in a rather frenetic world. I am joined in my walks by friends, other families, bike riders, rollerbladers and dog lovers all enjoying the same thing. Recently, however, I am seeing this beautiful piece of property being taken away piece by piece.
First it was 15 large trees lining the hillside to make room for a large baseball field. Of course, the field can now be used for some of our older children in the town, so I do understand. Secondly, more pieces were taken away when there appeared mounds of dirt, trucks, and construction that blocked our walkways and paths. That, too, was to make way for a large athletic center to be used by the town. Again, I understand since this generous gift benefits us all. Next there appeared the large poles carrying electrical wires above ground (wasnât the agreement that all electric be underground?). Increasingly more areas are being blocked off because of construction, building, and other assorted plans.
The final straw came last week when I read in The Bee that the first selectman and town officials were considering selling the beautiful meadow and acreage to the Army. I can just imagine the impact on the walkers, the families, the bikers, the dogs and dog lovers, and all those who come to enjoy the peace and quiet of this beautiful property.
When will it end? Piece by piece our âopen spaceâ land is being taken away. I strongly propose that the powers that be communicate on a monthly basis to the townspeople about all the plans for Fairfield Hills, the additional costs involved, the expenditures, the variances. Letâs not read something in The Bee that becomes another new surprise. Rather, letâs go back to the original agreement and see where we are in comparison to that plan. My sense is that additional âpiece by pieceâ removal is not visible anywhere in that plan. When will it end?
