Theater Barn To Open ‘Secret Garden’ For The Holiday Season

RIDGEFIELD — The Ridgefield Theater Barn will welcome the holiday season with music and song when The Secret Garden opens on November 14. With book and lyrics by Marsha Norman, music by Lucy Simon and based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, this Tony and Drama Desk award-winning musical will appeal to audiences of all ages.

The Ridgefield production is being directed by Missy Slaymaker-Hanlon, who brings her talent and experience as the Barn’s director of the Young Performers Musical Workshops to this show. Musical director is Michael Barber; Wayne Leiss and Craig David Rosen are co-producers.

Set in 1906 the story concerns Mary, a young English girl forced to move to England from colonial India when her parents die in a cholera outbreak. There she lives with her emotionally stunted uncle and her invalid cousin.

Discovering a hidden and neglected garden, she bravely overcomes dark forces and aided by a young gardener, brings it — along with her young cousin and uncle — back to life.

Theater critics unanimously applauded The Secret Garden. Time called it “elegant, entrancing”; USA Today called it “a splendid, intelligent musical … it’s all you can hope for in children’s theatre … but the best surprise is that this show is [also a] most adult musical.”

NY Newsday found it “a many splendored…fable that neither cloys or loses grip on its unique spell,” and Christian Science Monitor praised how it “revels in theatrical imagination [and] achieves the irresistible appeal that moves audiences to standing ovations.”

The Secret Garden performances will continue Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 pm through December 13, with Sunday matinees at 2 pm on November 23 and 30 and December 7.

The Ridgefield Theater Barn is at 37 Halpin Lane. Seating is cabaret style and the audience is invited to bring food and beverage to enjoy before the performance and during intermission; doors open one hour prior to curtain.

Tickets are $26 adults, $22 seniors and students, and are available at RidgefieldTheaterBarn.org.
