Nighthawk Swimmers, Diver Compete In State Championships

Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team competed in the Class L State Championships — diving in Middletown on November 5 and swimming at Cornerstone Aquatics Center in West Hartford on November 11. The Nighthawks scored 225 points and placed ninth as a team; Ridgefield won the competition with 930 points.

Nighthawk diver Aliyah Reuther placed 17th with a score of 295.15.

Zoe Petertonjes had a pair of top-five finishes. She was fourth in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.65 and came in third in the 100 butterfly in 59.66.

Maddie Marcisz came in 11th in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:18.64 and was 14th in the 100 breaststroke, clocking in at 1:13.46. Indigo Land was 19th in the 50 free in 26.77. Sierra Marx took 21st in the 100 free in 58.13. The Hawks had a pair of finishers in the 100 backstroke event, as Marx placed 19th in 1:06.01 and Ella Murphy took 23rd in 1:07.88.

Three Newtown relay teams competed. The 200 yard medley relay team comprised of Marx, Marcisz, Petertonjes, and Land was seventh in 1:57.09. Newtown’s 200 free relay of Land, Marcisz, Marx, and Petertonjes was eighth in 1:45.64. The 400 free relay of Murphy, Emma Sheehan, Ella Viau, and Reagan Garvin placed 11th in a time of 4:12.60.

The season continues for the state’s top swimmers in the State Open, at Yale University in New Haven on Sunday, November 16 at 1 pm.
