Newtown High School Lists Scholarships

The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application.

The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships.

If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP, the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060 or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.

RMHC National Scholarship Program — Students of all ethnic backgrounds who face limited access to educational and career opportunities are eligible to apply for RMHC scholarships. Current high school seniors who will attend a two- or four-year college or university full time are eligible. Information is available at www.rmhc.org. The application deadline is January 17.

Braindance Awards — A $1,000 award will be presented to the best high school student project on schizophrenia and the brain in a competition sponsored by The Institute of Living, Hartford. Submissions will be evaluated on originality, ability to fight stigma, and accuracy. Application forms, information and procedures are available at www.nrc-iol.org. The submission deadline is February 1.

AAA Travel High School Challenge — This is a three-stage competition on geography, travel literacy, and tourism for ninth to twelfth grade students. Applicants must register at www.aaa.com/travelchallenge to take an online multiple-choice test that will take place January 9–17. Top scorers from each state competition will compete at the national finals in Orlando, Fla., for college scholarships. The Career Center has basic information.
