Kelley Haines made her oral commitment to attend the University of New Hampshire back in August, but last week made it official by signing her National Letter of Intent while Joann Haines, her mother, and Gregg Simon, Newtown High School athletic director, looked on.

Haines will play her senior year under new coach Tim Salem and the prospects for a dramatic season are well known. Haines is just 142 points of cracking the 1,000-point barrier and 257 points shy of breaking Lynn Lattanzio’s school record of 1,115 career points.

Haines considered Boston University and the University of Delaware as two of her other top choices, but settled on the University of New Hampshire, citing the coaches as well as the scenic campus for helping her decide.

The UNH Lady Wildcats – coached by Sue Johnson, now in her sixth year – finished 13-16 overall and 7-9 in the America East Conference in 2002-03. Maren Mathias of Guilford, one of the twin towers who helped oust Newtown High School from the CIAC Class LL state tournament back in 2000, presently is the ‘Cats senior center and leading scorer.

UNH was voted fourth best in the America East Conference pre-season poll. The Lady Wildcats defeated the Austrian club team UBBC Herzogenburg, 81-56, in pre-season action recently as Mathias scored 20 points and dragged down nine rebounds

.

The ‘Cats will square off against teams like Stony Brook, Quinnipiac University and the University of Hartford.
