NHS Singers To Hold Annual Madrigal Dinner
NHS Singers To Hold Annual Madrigal Dinner
By Eliza Hallabeck
During a night that will include jesters, a dinner, a cappella singing and a staged murder, the Newtown High School Singers group will hold its annual Madrigal Feaste at Stony Hill Inn in Bethel this Saturday, November 22.
Music teacher John Harned said the night is characterized by great choral music, wild and wacky entertainment and general whimsical nonsense. The night will also include a feast, a silent auction and a raffle.
Madrigal music is sung without instrumental accompaniment and was largely fashionable in the 16th Century. Student in Singers will be dressed appropriately for the occasion, along with the jesters.
At the beginning of the night the jesters will be introduced, and the rest will follow, Mr Harned said at a practice for the group after school on Monday. During the night there will be a staged murder, and one of the presenters â it could be one of the singers â will be murdered. Throughout the night interrogations and questions will happen.
âAt the very end one of you will be determined as being the murderer,â said Mr Harned.
The students themselves do not know who it will be.
âUltimately the Madrigal Dinner is about us as a choral group,â said Mr Harned.
Throughout the night many songs will be sung, including well-known Christmas pieces like Silent Night, Holly Night.
Mr Harned said a previously recorded CD of the Singers will be sold during the night, and some of the songs from the night are on it.
Tickets have been selling fast, according to Mr Harned, but there are still some left. Tickets are being offered for $38 for adults and $17 for guests ages 2 through 10.
