Police Press Seatbelt Law Enforcement On Local Roads

Newtown police this week joined with police from Bethel, Brookfield, and Redding, as well as state police, in monitoring motorists for seatbelt compliance in the multitown region.

On Tuesday morning, the police group positioned itself along a straightaway on Hawleyville Road, near North Ridge Drive, monitoring whether passing motorists were wearing seatbelts, as is required by state law.

Motorists who were found to be in violation of the seatbelt law or in obvious violation of other laws were stopped and directed to turn into North Ridge Drive where police investigated.

The work is part of the national “Click It or Ticket” seatbelt enforcement project.

Sergeant Christopher Vanghele said that from  9 to 11 am on Tuesday on Hawleyville Road, police issued eight infractions for seatbelt violations, and also handed out one infraction and one warning for other violations.

The multitown police squad moved among various locations in the region this week to enforce the seatbelt law, plus other violations.

On Monday in Newtown, the squad issued 24 infractions and two warnings for seatbelt violations, plus six miscellaneous infractions for other violations, the sergeant said.

The seatbelt enforcement project was made possible through a government grant program, he said.

Increased seatbelt enforcement will continue through November 30.
