Probation Violation
After learning that Newtown police held a warrant for his arrest, Joseph Cappellano, 22, of Waterbury turned himself in at the Waterbury police station on November 18 and was arrested on a charge of violation of probation, according to Newtown police.
Newtown police then transported Cappellano to the Newtown police station where his arrest was processed. Newtown police held Cappellano on $50,000 bail for an arraignment that day in Danbury Superior Court.
Cappellano was being held this week on $80,000 bail at the Bridgeport Correctional Center for an upcoming court appearance.
The violation of probation charge stems from an original case in which Cappellano, on July 20, 2004, engaged Newtown police in two separate vehicular chases. Cappellano was captured following a short foot chase, and then charged with 13 offenses.
In that incident, police charged Cappellano with engaging in pursuit, driving under the influence, two counts of reckless driving, three counts of reckless endangerment, and two counts of interfering with police. Cappellano also was charged with failure to obey a stop sign, failure to drive to the right, driving while under suspension, and driving without automotive insurance. Cappellano had lived in Newtown at the time of that 2004 incident.
Sandy Hook Crash
Police report a collision involving a sport-utility vehicle and a van about 4:15 pm November 16, near 45 Berkshire Road.
Motorist Kenneth Greene, 47, of Oxford, who was driving a 2005 Ford Explorer eastward on Berkshire Road, struck the rear end of an eastbound 1998 Ford E-250 van driven by Steven Klapyk, 26, of Naugatuck, police said. John Klapyk, 27, of New Haven was a passenger in the van, police said.
Both Klapyks were treated at the scene for minor injuries, police said.
Police issued Greene a written warning for following too closely. Police issued both Klapyks infraction tickets for failure to wear seatbelts.
Infant Formula
Newtown police report that store detectives at the Super Stop & Shop supermarket at Sand Hill Plaza observed Roy Mrozowski, 43, of Danbury leave the store with $47 worth of liquefied and powdered infant formula without having paid for it at about 11:20 am on November 17.
The store detectives confronted Mrozowski in the store parking lot and he then drove off, leaving the infant formula at the scene, police said. Police later located Mrozowski in Sandy Hook Center and charged him with sixth degree larceny. He was released on $500 bail for a December 1 court appearance.
DUI Charge
At about 6:15 pm November 17, police spotted a vehicle that had a dead headlamp traveling on Route 302 in Dodgingtown, so they stopped it on Jacklin Road to investigate.
On investigating, police charged motorist Ryan Briggs, 21, of Bridgeport with driving under the influence, possession of marijuana, and failure to have a functioning headlamp.
Police released Briggs on $50 bail for a December 1 court appearance.
Violation of Order
About 10 pm November 19, police charged Carl Gesualdi, 44, of Danbury with criminal violation of a protective order, after police learned that Gesualdi was on the premises of a Papoose Hill Road residence that a judge had ordered Gesualdi to avoid, police said. Gesualdi was scheduled to appear in court November 21 for arraignment on the violation.
DUI Arrest
Police report that at about 8 pm November 19, they located motorist Jerome Williams, 58, of Brookfield slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle, which was parked with its engine running in the middle of the southern driveway at Sand Hill Plaza on South Main Street.
Police said they detected a strong odor of alcohol on Williams, adding that he became verbally abusive and could not perform field sobriety tests. During arrest processing, Williams attempted to assault police, according to police.
Police arrested Williams on charges of driving under the influence and interfering with police. He was released on $500 bail for a December 9 court appearance.
Burglary/Larceny
Sometime between 2 pm on November 19 and 10 am on November 20, someone broke into a locked pickup truck that was parked at McKenney Mechanical Contractors, Inc, at 20-A Commerce Road, police report. Several items worth a total of $600 were stolen from the vehicle, police said. Police are investigating the burglary/larceny and ask anyone with information on the crime to contact Officer David Kullgren at 426-5841 or 270-8888.Â
Toddy Hill Crash
Motorist Jesse Hill, 20, of Southbury was driving a 2002 Chevrolet van northward on Toddy Hill Road, near Quarry Ridge Road, about 7 pm November 18, when a deer entered the road, resulting in a collision, police report. Hill was not injured. Police took no enforcement.
Grand Cherokee
Motorist Andrew Rankin, 60, of Trumbull, who was driving a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee eastward on Dodgingtown Road, near Dodgingtown Garage, about 6:20 pm November 18, encountered a deer in the road, police said. The jeep and deer collided. Rankin was not injured. Police took no enforcement.
Subaru Vs Subaru
Police report a collision involving two Subarus at the intersection of South Main Street and Country Club Road about 3:36 pm November 18.
Motorist Christopher Roumanis, 17, of 1 Toddy Hill Road, who was driving a 2001 Outback, was traveling eastward on Country Club Road and was then making a right turn onto southbound South Main Street, as motorist Linda Pale, 62, of Monroe was driving a 2001 Forester southward on South Main Street, police said. The two vehicles collided. There were no injuries. Police issued Roumanis an infraction ticket for failure to obey a stop sign.
Main Street Accident
Police report a two-vehicle accident near 79 Main Street about 3:14 pm November 18.
Motorist Jenna Wilkie, 18, of 23 Castle Meadow, who was driving a 2002 Saturn SL-1 southward in a line of traffic, slowed and then stopped for traffic conditions, police said.
Southbound motorist Michele Payne, 37, of 39 Tunnel Road, who was driving a 2001 Chrysler Town & Country minivan, then struck the Saturn from behind, police said. Payne received a written warning for traveling at an unsafe distance, police said.
Off The Road
Motorist Thomas Mangone, 36, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Impala eastward on Mt Pleasant Road, near Taunton Lane, about 1:30 am November 18, was involved in a car accident, police said.
Mangone lost control of the auto, spun around, jumped some curbing along the westbound road shoulder, slid across a lawn at 140 Mt Pleasant Road, and then collided with a tree, police said. Mangone complained of pain and was transported to Danbury Hospital by ambulance volunteers to be checked, police said. Police issued Mangone an infraction for a turning violation.
