An American foreign war veteran, he served in Germany from 1951-1953 as a special agent to the Counter Intelligence Corps during the Korean conflict.

In Marlow, he was also a lodge member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

For the past 20 years, Mr Howland served as a contributor, trustee, and founding member of the Iroquois Indian Museum, Schohaire, N.Y., with his life-long friends John and Katherine Ferguson, and his wife, Marilyn Crosson Howland. Mr Howland, a lover of jazz, classical music, classic movies, and genealogy, was also a tenth generation descendant of Henry Howland, one of the original Plymouth colonists.

He also is survived by his wife, Marilyn A. His eldest son Christopher Aubrey Howland, of New York, N.Y., a commercial artist in the publishing field and also a former McGraw-Hill employee, died May 4 in Newtown, at age 43.

Mr Howland’s father, Horace T. Howland, Sr, also worked for McGraw-Hill, making the Howlands the only family, other than the McGraws or Hills, to have three succeeding generations employed by the company.
