Snow Birds Leaving Cancer Patients In Need
Snow Birds Leaving Cancer Patients In Need
For decades, the American Cancer Societyâs Road to Recovery program has provided countless free rides to-and-from treatment for greater Danbury cancer patients.
Unfortunately, it is hard for volunteers to keep up with the demand for rides in the winter because many drivers head south for the cold weather months, leaving many cancer patients without rides to the treatment they need now.
The American Cancer Society is currently seeking volunteers from greater Danbury to drive cancer patients to their treatment appointments. Treatment can make a patient feel too sick to drive. And in many cases, a patient is driven to hospitals and clinics by relatives or friends, but occasionally they need to seek alternative transportation.
Volunteer drivers receive simple training and an orientation from the American Cancer Society, and are asked to volunteer for at least one hour, one day, once a month. The society matches driversâ availability with the needs of patients who call.
