Patriotism on Display at Newtown High School
To The Editor:
This year I was incredibly honored to serve as the Chair of Newtown’s American Legion Post 202 Oratorical Contest. To say I walked away inspired is an understatement. Our six student participants brought heart, discipline, and seriousness to a competition rooted in the Constitution and the duties we share as citizens.
I have spent much of my life in public service, from flying combat missions in Afghanistan to advancing civic engagement here at home. Nothing brings me more pride than seeing young people step forward with the same sense of purpose. They truly showed it in full force.
I will defer to the Newtown Bee coverage for the announcement of winners. Instead, I want to celebrate all six students who performed incredibly in this year’s competition: Atley Ammerman, Francesco Carr, Annabella Carr, Sonya Feder, Jay Madhavan, and Gabriella Payne. They all earned the respect of everyone in the room. They spoke with clarity. They honored our Constitution. They reminded us that patriotism is alive and well in the next generation.
The students delivered complex speeches without notes on a variety of Constitutional topics. They reflected on rights, responsibilities, and the character of a self-governing nation. They demonstrated the courage to speak publicly about meaningful issues.
I am immensely grateful for the volunteers who helped bring this contest to life. Post 202 Commander Donna Monteleone provided unwavering support from start to finish. She sets a proud example for our Post and our community. Brandy Jacobs at the Newtown High School Career Center advertised and coordinated the event with tireless energy and kindness. As a result of her hard work, every student had what they needed to succeed.
Our volunteer judges and staff were also indispensable. They all devoted their time because they believe in civic education and they believe in these students.
It is clear that Newtown takes citizenship seriously. Our students proved that again this year. Their work reflects the values of civic engagement and community. These young leaders carry those values forward, and that gives me real hope.
I am proud of every student. I am grateful for every volunteer. And I am thankful to live in a town where the next generation so deeply believes in our Constitutional values.
