Curtiss House Open House Was Festive And Fun

To the Editor,

The Newtown Historical Society held its annual holiday open house at the Matthew Curtiss House this past Sunday, and I am pleased to say that it was a festive, fun and successful way to end 1999 for the society.

It takes many people and a lot of hard work to make any event a success, but it is more difficult around the holidays when people seem to have more obligations and even less time. I would like to thank the following for their generous contributions: all the docents and junior docents who donated their time to staff the Matthew Curtiss House; Town Historian Dan Cruson for answering pressing historical questions and being the steady presence he always is at society events; Newtown Garden Club, especially JoAnn Scebold, Patty Graves, Girl Scout Troops 433 and 591, and Newtown Farm and Garden Center for the spectacular holiday decorations which brightened the Curtiss House immeasurably; Suzanne Hurley, Ellie Neiman and Bonnie Miller for donating their time on a busy Sunday; The Big Y of Newtown for contributing to our refreshment offerings; The Newtown Bee for help in publicizing our events; and, of course, the folks of Newtown for supporting the historical society through purchases and donations, and for visiting the Matthew Curtiss House this holiday season which makes all our work worthwhile.

Happy holidays and sincere thanks to all.

Elin F. Hayes, President
