Scholarships Arrive At High School

The following scholarships have arrived in the Career Center at Newtown High School.  Applications and/or information for these scholarships, as well as ones previously listed in The Bee, are available there.

Elks National Foundation – “Most Valuable Student” scholarship competition.  All seniors are eligible to submit an application listing honors, awards, and community service, and write an essay stating what role leadership has played in your high school accomplishments.  This competition is based on scholarship, leadership and financial need.  First award totals $7,500 for each academic year; 2nd - $4,000; 3rd - $3,000; and 4th - $1,000.  Application deadline is January 4, 2000.

Chuck Hall Star of Tomorrow Scholarship – Up to $4,000 offered by the American Bowling Congress.  Open to male students who have an interest in bowling.  Deadline is January 15, 2000.

Alberta E. Crow Star of Tomorrow Scholarship – Up to $4,000 offered by the American Bowling Congress.  Open to female students who have an interest in bowling.  Deadline is January 15, 2000.

Milk Mustache/Sammy 2000 – “Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year” awards.  Recognizes graduating high school student athletes who show excellence in academics, athletic performance, leadership and community service.  To receive an official application kit and rules, enter on the Web site www.whymilk.com or call 800/Why-Milk.  Winners receive a $7,500 college scholarship,  invitation to attend an awards weekend June 23 through 25, 2000, and opportunity to be in a Milk Mustache ad in the June edition of USA Today.  Applications must be postmarked by 3/15/2000.

The Albert and Helen Meserve Memorial Scholarship Program – Ten $2,500 awards for high school seniors/graduates planning to enroll in a full time accredited post-secondary school leading to a degree in the environmental studies (includes, but not limited to, agriculture, animal husbandry, ecological studies, forestry or marine sciences).  Students interested in other majors will also be considered but preference given to environmental studies candidates.  Applicants must be residents of the following Connecticut towns:  Bethel, Brookfield, Bridgewater, Danbury, New Fairfield, New Milford, Newtown, Redding, Ridgefield, Sherman.  Form must be completed and mailed by February 1, 2000.
