Girlsâ Basketball
Â
Opening Day
Thursday, December 9
at St. Josephâs
7 pm
In A Nutshell
The Lady Nighthawks will have to go without star center Amanda Marsilio, who tore an anterior cruciate ligament during a pre-season scrimmage and will be out for at least six months. But the team is talented, has the ability to shoot, and can run the floor. Things should still be mighty exciting.
Quotable
âPeople will have to step and I think we have the people here who can do it.â â coach Gregg Simon

Swimming
Â
Opening Day
Thursday, December 16
vs West Haven
7 pm
In A Nutshell
The swimmers may have the strongest, deepest team they have had in years and expect to be among the elite teams in the South-West Conference. Pomperaug and Weston are still strong and Newtown hopes to contend with those teams for a title.
Quotable
âI feel with the type of swimmers we have â and the depth â we could be a very good dual meet team.â â coach Brian Reiff

Wrestling
Â
Opening Day
Thursday, December 16
vs Bunnell
6 pm
In A Nutshell
The Nighthawks lost an amazing wrestler in James Monroe â not to mention wrestlers like Brian Tomasulo, Paul Giarratano and Steve McCulloch â but they feel they may be stronger across the board than they were a year ago.
Quotable
âItâs looking as if weâre going to be able to do something. Weâll see a big improvement. Weâll know better in January, but I just have a feeling.â - coach Alan Potter

Opening Day
Saturday, December 18
at Reindeer Relays
9:30 am
In A Nutshell
The girls are banged up and missing some key people from a year ago, but expect to challenge for their fourth consecutive South-West Conference Championship. The boysâ numbers are way up, giving them an edge in their climb towards the top of the SWC.
Quotable
â I think they still have a pretty good shot (at the title), even after losing some key people. They are still in the running.â â coach Dave Foss
Boysâ Basketball
Â
Opening Day
Thursday, December 16
at Warren Harding
7 pm
In A Nutshell
The team self-destructed late last season with some academic problems, but everyone is back and re-focussed on the goal of being at the top of the SWC. The âHawks were 8-11 a year ago but hope to improve over that tremendously.
Quotable
âIâm very optimistic after the first week. Weâve got a good mix of sophomores, juniors and seniors. The guys are very focused, extremely athletic, and there have been a few pleasant surprises.â â coach John Quinn.
