Theater Review: Sherman's Production Of "Alice" Is All Sweetness
SHERMAN — A sweet confection of the enduring story of Alice’s adventures down the rabbit hole, set to music, is being offered by the Sherman Players. Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, adapted by Christopher Rich and directed by Beth Bonnabeau, is a delightful holiday offering. The young’un sitting in front of me laughed and giggled throughout a recent performance.
Faith Flannagan, playing Alice, is just the right mix of confidant and naïve, and she sings like an angel. A shout out to the alternate Alice, Nicole Kolitsas, who played the magical key in the December 3 preview performance with terrific presence and a beautiful smile.
The cast is comprised of young and old alike, and the tale’s well-known antics are played out with comic and charming enthusiasm.
Clever staging and choreography have been updated and add to the humor of this piece. The set, designed by the very talented Beth Bonnabeau, is simple yet provides ample room for the large moving parts, which are used to usher in various characters.
All of the players sang, danced and fully embraced their characters. Standouts among them include the aforementioned Ms Flannagan in the title role. She is onstage throughout and keeps her portrayal lively and engaged.
A jazzy mouse singing the “Kitty Cat Blues,” played by Newtown’s Aubrey Hankin, was spot on. She rocked both the choreography and vocal r&b of her solo like a pro.
Robin Frome as the caterpillar was a hoot with a costume to match. His zany Italian caterpillar was a hilarious character.
Playing the Mad Hatter to perfection, Steven Stott was a bundle of crazy and very funny. Cheyenne Brown played the cutest dormouse I have ever seen, and her sister, Savannah, was the precious pig.
A mention goes to the four playing cards: Tyler Holm, Spencer Hanlon, Jack Harding and Ryan Fitzgerald. They are skilled performers who capture attention with their lively antics.
Capping off the mayhem was the Queen of Hearts, commandingly and outrageously played by the wonderful Missy Slaymaker-Hanlon. She was broadly comedic singing a very contemporary styled song which she delivered with all the right moves. She was terrific.
The costumes by Terry Hawley are spectacular. This costumer pulled out all the stops and went for it, producing a fantastic wardrobe which thoroughly enhances the fantasy atmosphere.
Children love live theater. It is magical to watch them take it all in. Don’t miss this opportunity to provide them with this rich and amusing experience.
