Philip James Scappatura II was called to heaven on November 22, 2025, at the age of 84 at his home in Newtown.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Antoinette (Tuozzolo) Scappatura; his beloved wife of 56 years, Patricia J. (Mikula) Scappatura; his son, Philip J. Scappatura III; and his sister, Dorothy S. Virtuoso.

Philip is survived by his two daughters: Gail Scappatura Mitchell (R. Scott Mitchell) and Jennifer Scappatura; his grandchildren Philip J. Scappatura IV, Justin Scappatura-Davis (Andrew), Trevor Scappatura (Julia), Isabel Harrington, Sophie Harrington, Norah Harrington, and Ava Mitchell. He is also survived by many loving nieces and cousins.

Philip was born on July 22, 1941, in Port Chester, N.Y., and grew up in a vibrant Italian community. As a conscientious student, Philip majored in mechanical drawing, excelled in mathematics, achieved Eagle Scout and was awarded outstanding student for wood shop. He graduated from Port Chester High School in 1959 and later earned an Associate degree in Applied Science from New York City College of Technology, specializing in Tool & Die Making. In October 1963, Philip proudly joined the Army National Reserves, reflecting his dedication to service and discipline.

As a master tool & die maker, Philip first worked in N.J. and then went on to begin his long career with Pitney Bowes in Connecticut. Philip was a friend and mentor among his peers, a subject-matter expert in his field, and was promoted to group leader of the Plastics Unit Tool Room.

In April 1967, Philip and Patricia married at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Port Chester, N.Y., and were blessed with three children. Philip went on to master his skill of carpentry and DIY projects and renovated several homes and finished various parts of their dream home. It was not uncommon for a bedroom to turn into a future kitchen or bathroom. They went on to spend their next 45 years as parishioners of St Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church and residents of Newtown.

Philip — affectionately known as “Henry” by his wife and “Poppy” by his grandchildren — will forever be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and cherished friend. His home was the heart of his life, a place where family and friends were always welcomed with open arms. A passionate cook who learned at his mother’s side, Philip passed down treasured Italian recipes, from his signature chicken parmesan to delicate pizzicati cookies, creating meals that became family traditions. Beyond the kitchen, he was an avid gardener and farmer, transforming his property into a haven of fruit trees, vibrant vegetable gardens, and even chickens and ducks. If a rock wall needed building, he became a mason; if a project called for creativity, he embraced it wholeheartedly. His love for animals was boundless — welcoming everything from reptiles and French-lopped bunnies to loyal dogs, majestic St Bernards, and countless cats. Birds and woodpeckers frequented his feeders. Philip’s life was a beautiful blend of craftsmanship, care, and unconditional love.

Philip and Patricia’s creativity included reupholstering and refinishing furniture and even building their own pottery wheel back in the 70s. Summers were enjoyed at the beach, fishing and navigating the waters and islands of the Long Island Sound on their boat and long walks at Todd’s Point in Greenwich. Their love of projects continued, and in 1981, Philip designed and built his own coal burning stove that went on to heat their two homes 44 winters later.

Above all, Philip will be remembered for the unwavering faith that guided his life and the strong foundation he built for his family. Finally, at the age of 70, Philip along with family made it to Italy to fulfill a life long dream he had documented in his high school yearbook — “to travel the world” and to see the country his grandfather had immigrated from. He was blessed to attend a Mass with the Pope at the Vatican. After the unexpected passing of his beloved wife in 2023, Poppy embraced quiet moments with grace. He cherished FaceTime calls, family meals, and holiday gatherings that kept him connected to those he loved most. His remarkable work ethic, endless curiosity, and ability to master any task earned him the title of “jack of all trades.” Through it all, Poppy remained humble and deeply grateful to everyone who cared for him, leaving behind a legacy of strength, faith, and love.

Family and friends are welcome to attend a Mass of the Resurrection on Tuesday, December 16, at 10:30 am, at St Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Newtown.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and St Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church.
