In Caroluzziâs lobby December 4, the âdogâ beside resident Howard Lasher drew glances. Life-size and a yellow labâs true color, the replica of a Guiding Eyes for the Blind dog and her puppy were a reminder for donations.
âEvery bit helps,â said Guiding Eyes Vice President Lisa Deutsch. The donation dog is part of the nonprofit organizationâs effort to reach its annual goal of $17 million needed to operate. Shaking hands with store manager Greg Johnston, she said, âEfforts like this are important.â Guiding Eyes is âdedicated to enriching the lives of blind and visually impaired men and women,â according to a statement on its website at www.guidingeyes.org.
A volunteer for the organization, Mr Lasher admitted last week, âIâve gone to the dogs.â He hopes to bring attention to the donation dog in the local grocery store.
More than 100 dogs are now in the area through Guiding Eyes volunteers, Ms Deutsch explained. Volunteers might raise puppies, care for a litter, participate in early training and socialization, foster a brood or stud, provide socialization, or help in the Yorktown Heights, N.Y., office.
