Grateful For Newtown Volunteer Ambulance EMT Class
To The Editor:
It happened again; Steve Rambone and the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps (NVAC) held another excellent training to bring new EMTs into the world. NVAC handles most ambulance calls in Newtown, totaling >3500/yr, primarily through the volunteer hours of your friends and neighbors. We all get high quality, efficient field medical treatment and transportation in our most dire hours from NVAC. As the town of Newtown grows and as veteran members leave, the Corps needs to keep restocking with fresh members. Completing the EMT course and passing the National Registry exam is the first step toward joining NVAC or many other civic and career paths.
By the numbers for this class: 21 students ranging from high schoolers to later middle aged, 150 hours in class through nights and weekends, 41 chapters read and quizzed, 10 ambulance ride-alongs each, 5 practical stations drilled, 4 type III rigs, 3 station canines (visiting), 2 pelvic splinting methods taught, and a Mr. Rambone who deserves some rest in a pear tree.
We will variously start applying our new skills in the following ways: supporting family and friends better in daily life, becoming Safety Officers at our places of business, joining the EMT service as a volunteer, cross-training for Firefighter services, expanding our skills through nurse or medical school, or joining a commercial EMT service in neighboring cities. If any of these experiences appeal to you, we strongly encourage you to sign up for the next 26Q1/winter EMT course or a future session. Many thanks to Mr. Rambone and the whole of NVAC.
