Centennial Celebration Of Flight
Centennial Celebration Of Flight
WINDOR LOCKS â One hundred years ago â on December 17, 1903 â the Wright brothers made history and changed the course of the world when Orville made the first manned, controlled and powered winged flight at Kitty Hawk, N.C., a flight that lasted 12 seconds.
From December 26 to 30, visitors can experience much of this excitement and history at New England Air Museum through a special centennial of flight exhibits, a craft activity for children, an opportunity to meet Orville and Wilbur Wright impersonators after viewing The Wright Idea film, and a speaker presentation.
Fifteen previously unpublished photos of the Wright brothersâ work from 1911 and their aero engine number 17, which is the oldest running airplane engine in existence, as well as panels of photos and text describing their history, will be on display.
Saturday, December 27, is âOpen Cockpitâ day with eight aircraft open for visitors to climb in and play pilot. Visitors must wear rubber soled shoes or sneakers to climb into the aircraft. Cockpits will remain open until 4 pm.
The museum is open 10 am to 5 pm daily. It is adjacent to Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, off Exit 40 off I-91 north or south. Additional information is available at 860-623-3305 or www.neam.org.
