DANBURY â The Danbury Animal Welfare Society (DAWS) today announced that it will hold its first ever âHome for the Holidaysâ adoption program. Its goal is to place 100 needy, homeless animals with loving families in the Greater Danbury Area by January 4th.
DAWS aims to achieve this goal through extended open hours, off-site adoption events, and a heightened public awareness of the overwhelming number of needy animals in the Greater Danbury area.
âThe generosity of spirit that the holiday season engenders must include the hundreds of helpless, innocent animals who desperately need homes and familiesâ said DAWS President Kathryn Taubert. âWe are asking people not to go to breeders and âpetâ stores when there are so many orphans literally dying for a home on local streets.â
The recent surge in the number of stray animals has pushed many shelters across the country to capacity, including DAWS. The result is that is that there is no room for DAWS to take in new homeless animals, many of whom are abandoned or injured and in need of medical care. Unless DAWS can find good homes for many of the animals currently in its care, local needy animals will have no place to turn.
DAWS volunteers are trained to help families find the right animal for their personalities and lifestyles. As part of the âHome for the Holidaysâ adoption program, DAWS open house hours are being extended. Through January 4, the organization will be open to all those interested in adopting animal Monday through Friday 6 to 8 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays 2 to 4:30 pm.
DAWS will also be joining forces with North Shore Animal League (NSAL) to host off-site adoption events on the NSAL van.
DAWS animals available for adoption will be on the NSAL van as follows:
December 11 â Choice Pet Supply, Newtown Road, Danbury, 2 to 6 pm; December 13 â Choice Pet Supply, Newtown Road, Danbury, 11 to 3 pm; December 18 â Brookfield PETCO, Federal Road, 2 to 6 pm; December 31 â Southbury Green, 2 to 6 pm.
