Filling The Pantry

To the Editor:

The volunteers at the FAITH Food Pantry have been so busy sorting, shelving, and boxing the incredibly generous donations we recently received that we are behind in our acknowledgements.

Just before Thanksgiving we received truck loads of food, literally. A combined effort of the local fire departments to Stuff the Truck enabled FAITH to stuff their shelves and storage areas. Thanks to the kindness of the Big Y and the Super Stop & Shop allowing our friends in the various fire departments to park their trucks in front of the stores and accept donations from their customers. The firefighters delivered box after box of food that lined the walls of the pantry and turkey after turkey that filled all our freezers.

Once again, our friends at St Rose Church have come to our rescue. The Knights of Columbus, the Youth Group, the Social Concerns Committee, and all the parishioners gathered another tremendous amount of food. They sorted and delivered another incredibly generous donation that will help see us through the winter months. Without the help of Joan Dwyer who has been a constant friend of the food pantry our work would be much more difficult. We know all we have to do is make a phone call when we need assistance and St Rose is there for us.

As I’ve said before, being involved with the FAITH Food Pantry is wonderfully rewarding, but not always for the obvious reason of helping those in need. Of course, that is our mission and keeps us all working hard. Yet it’s often most rewarding to witness the generosity of this community. For example, Karen Halstead, the organizer of the Stuff the Truck Food Drive told us the story of several people who brought filled grocery carts to the truck, took a couple bags from the cart’s child seat, and left the entire cart full of food.

There are so many thoughtful individuals, families, businesses, schools, and religious and civic organizations that support us all year long who deserve to be publicly recognized for their work. If I were to list them all, to be published in the Letter Hive, The Bee would need to run a special edition. We like to send acknowledgements to every donor but sometimes donations are made anonymously, or we don’t get enough information to send a thank you. Please know that each and every donation is appreciated by both the volunteers and especially the people who come to us for assistance. You all directly impact your Newtown neighbors with your generosity. You make this a very special place to live.

The volunteers of FAITH Food Pantry wish you all a happy and healthy holiday.

Sincerely,

Nancy Taylor
