Local Events Planned To Commemorate 12/14
With the third anniversary of 12/14 on Monday, December 14, local groups, organizations, and the town’s interfaith clergy association are planning myriad ways for residents to find comfort and/or help if they want or need it.
The following is a list of events that have been announced, arranged chronologically.
Congregation Adath Israel will mark the anniversary with a memorial service on Friday, December 11, at 7:30 pm.
As part of the synagogue’s regular Kabbalat Shabbat service, guests will join together as a community to remember, to hear the El Malei (mourner’s prayer) and mark the anniversary (yahrzeit) by reciting the Mourners Kaddish together.
The memorial service is an opportunity for individuals of all religious affiliations in the community as well as others to join together to honor the memory of the 26 children and educators who were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and offer support as well as comfort to their families, friends and those individuals who survived the shootings.
Rabbi Reuben Modek will lead the service.
Rabbi Modek resides in Nyack, N.Y., where he serves as the spiritual director of Hebrew Learning Circles, a synagogue without walls that provides inspirational Shabbat and holiday services together with Jewish education for adults and children.
The service will be followed by a traditional Oneg Shabbat, which consists of light refreshments.
Congregation Adath Israel is at 115 Huntingtown Road. For additional information, call 203-426-5188.
The recently formed nonprofit A Place for Hope and Healing will be holding prayer time office hours on Monday. The office, at 5A Glen Road, will be open from 7 am until 3 pm. The public is invited to stop in for prayer or to drop off written prayer requests.
Ken and Mary Perry, who are hosting the prayer time, are both trained Christian prayer ministers. Anyone wanting prayer may also e-mail their requests to mary@aplaceforhopeandhealing.org and the requests will be prayed for one week.
The Newtown Recovery and Resiliency Team will open its doors Monday from 8:30 am to 4 pm, for anyone desiring quiet reflection, a cup of tea or coffee, or to find support. Staff will be available to sit with anyone so desiring on this day.

The Resiliency Center of Newtown, 153 South Main Street, will have extended hours on Monday. The center, in the lower level of the SCB Building, will be open from 9 am until 5 pm.
“We will have opportunities for spontaneous creative experiences for all who walk through our door,” says Office Manager Jennifer Holguin.
There will be chair massage from 9 to 11 am; healing meditation, 10 am to 2 pm; terrarium building, 10 am to 5 pm; Zoe the Therapy Dog, noon to 4 pm; chocolate making, 1 to 3 pm; and brittle making, 4 to 5 pm.
Crisis counseling will be available all day.
“Most importantly,” Ms Holguin added, “we offer a safe and welcoming space to simply be.”
Resiliency Center of Newtown (RCN) is a program of Tuesday’s Children, which is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization. RCN was founded by a community member and offers long-term healing to anyone impacted by the events of 12/14, providing the resources so that every individual reaches his or her full potential.
The center is a welcoming place where people have found comfort connecting with others while finding appropriate services to assist in the healing process. It was formed in the aftermath of 12/14.

Since November 26, Hawleyville Fire Department has been sharing a new holiday offering. The volunteer fire company’s computer-controlled show is operating every night until January 8, from 5 to 11 pm. All are invited to visit the firehouse at 34 Hawleyville Road, roll up their vehicle’s windows (so as not to disturb nearby residents), tune their to 91.9 FM, and enjoy the show.
On Monday night, the musical selections will include the version of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” that was recorded by The Children of Newtown in January 2013. Also that night, firefighters will be collecting donations to support organizations that promote kindness.
An Interfaith Gathering for Prayer and Comfort at Trinity Episcopal Church, 36 Main Street, is being planned for Monday evening starting at 7.
(Please note this is the correct location for the gathering. Last week’s issue of The Newtown Bee had an incorrect location listed.)
Faith leaders from the town’s religious communities will guide the community by reading from sacred texts, offering prayers for our community, and allowing for times of silence to reflect and/or pray in their own way.
All are welcome. Parking will be available behind Trinity Church, and at Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street.
For more information call Newtown Congregational Church, 203-426-9024.
The gathering is sponsored by Newtown Interfaith Clergy Association.
The Reverend Matthew Crebbin, senior pastor for Newtown Congregational Church, issued an invitation to the community last week on behalf of Newtown Interfaith Clergy Association.
“As faith leaders, we come from a variety of religious communities that are diverse in belief and practice. However, we want you to know that we are united in our commitment to offer care and compassion to all of Newtown,” the December 4 notice said in part.
“As we near the three year Anniversary of the traumatic events at Sandy Hook School, we want to let you to know that we continue to hold this community in our prayers and we continue to offer care for anyone who wishes to find spiritual and faith-based support. Many of our individual fellowships will be offering specific events in the days around the anniversary as part of our worship and community life.”
Newtown Congregational Church, at 14 West Street, will offer a Service of Remembrance at 9 am Monday.
In addition, a quiet prayer and remembrance space will be available in the Church’s Gathering Room.
