Scholarships Arrive at High School

The following scholarships have arrived in the Career Center at Newtown High School.  Applications and/or information for these scholarships, as well as ones previously listed in the Bee, are available there. 

Governor’s Coalition for Youth with Disabilities – for high school seniors who have a disability and will pursue post high school education.  There will be nonrenewable scholarships in the amount of $1,000.  Additionally, there may be other special awards.  Finally, the Connecticut State University System is offering one four year renewable scholarship for $500 at each of the four state Universities – Central, Eastern, Southern and Western.  Award recipients will be selected on the basis of their demonstrated responsibility, character and promise for success in their chosen career.  Eligible candidates must have a disability as defined by the Special Education Law or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.  THERE WILL BE ONLY ONE NOMINEE from Newtown High School.  Students MUST HAVE their application in to the Career Center by February 1, 2000 so that the Selection Committee can review applicants and select one nominee.

The Friendship Scholarship – for Connecticut high school seniors who realize the importance of friendship and community service and have demonstrated a commitment to those ideals.  The awards will range from $1,000 to $2,500 each. Criteria for selecting finalists will be based on academic achievement and a demonstration of leadership in school and/or community volunteer work.  Academic achievement means a good scholastic record with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.  Deadline for filing application is March 31, 2000.

Hawley PTA Scholarship 2000 – to a graduating senior from Newtown High School who attended the Hawley School.  Scholarship recipients demonstrate the elements of character and achievement and dedication that represent the highest goals of education at Hawley School.  Applicant must be ranked academically in the top half of the graduating class.  Deadline for completed application is April 14, 2000.
