Firehouse Rejection Defies Common Sense

To the Editor:

Regarding your article about the Inland Wetlands Commission rejecting Hook & Ladder’s permit. Are you kidding me? I was a Dodgingtown fireman (living in Bethel) and moved to Texas in 2001. H&L’s firehouse was falling apart ten years ago, and I’m sure it has gotten worse.

OMG — They want to fill in 5,000 square feet. That’s a 100-foot by 50-foot piece of land out of 9.4 acres for crying out loud. Are the IWC members appointed or elected? My guess is they are appointed because they have no common sense. Half of Newtown is considered wetlands by these knuckleheads. What ever happened to private property rights? Where else downtown can the firehouse be built? Has anyone thought about the cost of buying that much property in Newtown? This is a great gift to Newtowners and it will be squandered because of a bunch of idealists living on Walden Pond. Too much power is wielded by these people. Wise up and fight this rejection.
