Carolyn Bloomberg
Carolyn Toby Bloomberg (nee Cohen), born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and a longtime resident of Newtown, passed away on December 16, 2025 at Laurel Ridge Senior Facility in Ridgefield.
She was born March 6, 1938, to Max and Jeannette Cohen. Carolyn moved to Connecticut in 1970 and bought her first (and only) house in Newtown in 1972 with her former husband Mort Bloomberg (divorced in 1979) and sons Jeffrey and Mark, where she lived for 49 years.
She earned a BS in Social Science from Simmons College and began her real estate career in 1977. She proudly maintained her realtor license for 44 years, retiring in 2021. Carolyn achieved the prestigious Certified Residential Specialist (CRS) designation, an honor held by fewer than four percent of realtors nationwide. She also spent four years working in real estate relocation at Travelers and was notably ahead of her time, having taken early computer science courses and landing a programmer job at GE – which had a positive influence on both of her children, who pursued college degrees and careers in the industry.
Carolyn loved Newtown and was active in the community. She was a member of the Adath Israel Synagogue of Newtown and the Beth El Synagogue of Woodbury and remained an engaged supporter of her local library and senior center. She was socially active and loved the theater, reading, enjoyed long phone calls with family and friends, and — always — a good cup of coffee (mostly decaf) and a pack of Kent 100s. Known for her fiery personality, she was strong-willed, and most definitely memorable. She kept a kosher home, baked legendary brownies, apple coffee cake, and chocolate chip cookies. She loved to shop and go antiquing. She was famously devoted to Marshall’s and TJ Maxx in her never-ending search for a bargain. You could find her on a weekday, meeting with her friends, going for breakfast or lunch and talking over her decaf for hours. She treasured her time with them.
Carolyn was a devoted single mother and grandmother. She had four grandchildren, one great granddaughter, and was especially close with her granddaughter, Erica Bloomberg. She took great interest in her grandchildren’s lives and education and was proud of their Jewish learning. As a single parent, she balanced work, PTA involvement, and after-school care of her teenage sons and eventually grandchildren Mitchell and Erica. She was a strong advocate for the importance of music and education and took immense pride in her children and grandchildren’s milestones, including a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade performance, her children and grandchildren’s bar and bat mitzvahs, and high school and college graduations.
She is survived by her brother, Arnold Cohen (Lucille), with whom she shared visits to his homes in Massachusetts and Florida, and by her children Jeffrey (Leslie), their children Mitchell (Noemi and great granddaughter Charlotte) and Erica, Mark (Julie) and their children, Benjamin and Aurora. All will remember her for her deep love, determination, and her unforgettable presence.
Carolyn will be remembered for her strength, independence, devotion to family, and the lasting impression she left on everyone who knew her.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 19, at noon, at Munson Lovetere Funeral Home, 235 Main Street North in Southbury.
