Boys’ Swim Squad Has Young But Deep Lineup As Hawks Dive Into A New Campaign
Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming team will dive into the season in rebuilding mode, with a deep lineup of competitors having a chance to get involved on the scoresheet at any given meet.
“This is a rebuilding year and we are a young team with a strong depth. Everyone has an opportunity to contribute, and our success will be dependent upon many people rising in their respective events,” Coach Ryan Eberts said.
Returning seniors are Jerry Stone, Jack Pettit, and Connor Kelly. Among the key returning team members is Alex Gadbut, “who is without a doubt our best freestyler,” Eberts said. Kyle Albrecht is back and is a strong butterfly and freestyle swimmer, and Finn Clancy will compete in mid-distance freestyle and breaststroke events.
The Nighthawks will look for emergence of less experienced varsity swimmers as they try to help keep the team competitive in each meet.
“Pomperaug [of Southbury] and Brookfield will be strong this year, and for us those two meets will be very important challenges for the swimmers to have some strong individual performances,” Eberts said. “We are excited to see what this team can do together. Camaraderie so far has been great, and they have a chance to surprise both themselves and their opponents with what they’re capable of.”
It all gets started with a Friday, December 19 home meet as Joel Barlow of Redding-Bethel visits at 4 pm. After a holiday break and block of practice time the Nighthawks get back into meets with another one at home, against Brookfield, Tuesday, January 6 at 4 pm.
