Girls’ Basketball Team Begins Season With Win Over Bassick Before Hard-Fought Loss
Newtown High School’s girls’ basketball team visited Bassick of Bridgeport and won 58-40 on December 12. Newtown then had its home opener when Stamford came to town on December 15, and the Nighthawks lost a close one despite a valiant comeback effort, 45-44.
In the win over Bassick, Sam Diaspro scored 23 points and had a dozen rebounds and five steals. Ana Morris had 14 points, five rebounds, and five steals; Addy Cordova dropped in nine points; Macey Arcario scored six points and grabbed five rebounds; and Madi Weston added four points and six rebounds.
Against Stamford, Newtown trailed by nine points multiple times in the opening half but chipped away. The Hawks trailed by four with 1:10 to go, but managed to tie the score and had a chance to go in front at the free throw line with 13 seconds left before Stamford ended up hitting a late tiebreaking free throw. Diaspro had another great all-around game with 22 points, six rebounds, and five steals. Weston had four points and ten rebounds, and Morris logged ten points.
Newtown is back at it Saturday, December 20, when Norwich Free Academy visits at 1 pm for the 15 For Life fundraiser and mental health awareness game. The Hawks are on break and on the road for a while after this one. They visit East Lyme Monday, December 29 at 2:30 pm and visit Stratford Monday, January 5 at 6 pm in the South-West Conference opener. NHS hosts Joel Barlow of Redding Thursday, January 8 at 6 pm.
