Steady Snowfall Blankets Town With Three Inches Of Precipitation
The first measurable snow of the 2025-26 season arrived during the early morning of Sunday, December 14, blanketing the town with approximately three inches of light, dry precipitation before moving out of the region by midday.
The official total for Newtown, as measured in the southwestern area of town by a National Weather Service (NWS) spotter, was 3.3 inches. Brookfield had the lowest accumulation, with 1.9 inches, and Norwalk had the highest, with NWS reporting 5.5 inches in the shoreline city.
Newtown Public Works Supervisor Anthony Capoziello said he and Town employees also felt there were “between three and four inches of snow” by the end of Sunday’s storm.
Town plows were called out at 1:30 am Sunday, he said. Most stayed active until 4:30 Sunday afternoon.
“The problem we had was, it wasn’t a big storm but it was a long duration,” Capozziello explained. “It kept covering the roads and we had to keep going after them, and they got a little hard packed.”
As of Wednesday, December 17, the National Weather Service was predicting a strong system of winds, heavy rain, and coastal flooding to arrive in the region on Friday, December 19. The extended forecast for Newtown shows a chance of rain and snow for Tuesday, December 23.
